A family has been forced from their upper duplex home at 1000 Saint Louis in Lachine following a early morning fire.

About 30 firefighters in 12 trucks got a quick handle on the blaze but one firefighter suffered a leg injury in the course of his duties.

The flames were under control by about 3:15 a.m. after the conflagration spread from the basement.

The flames quickly ascended to the ground-floor depanneur beneath the home on the corner of 10th Ave. which was built around 1860, according to city tax records.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and there is no sign as of yet that it was intentionally set.

The basement suffered the brunt of the damage but significant repairs will be required on the upper floors as well.
