MONTREAL - The federal Liberal party is preparing to hold its first big meeting since their historic defeat May 2.

In the conference next weekend, the party hopes to start turning around its recently-woeful fortunes. In the last federal election the Liberals lost their status as Official Opposition and their leader Michael Ignatieff to resignation.

According Liberal House Leader Marc Garneau the conference will hopefully usher in a new era and aim at attracting new blood.

Garneau concedes that for several years the federal Liberals have had a hard time recruiting young members.

And without new members the Liberal Party of Canada will struggle to find new ideas for his political agenda, he notes.

The meetings will help determine the terms and date of the next leadership race of the Liberal Party.

Garneau says that the Liberals will consider adopting a leadership vote based on the American primary system.
