Extreme heat warnings have been issued by Environment Canada for large swaths of Quebec.
While the maximum is normally around 25C in mid-August, the mercury is expected to reach or exceed 30C mainly in western, southwestern and central Quebec.
With the humidity, it will feel more like 40C in some areas, particularly in Montreal.
The Heat warning is in effect for:
- Châteauguay - La Prairie area
- Laval area
- Longueuil - Varennes area
- Montreal Island area
The heat wave could last until Thursday in places including the Eastern Townships, Montreal and Montérégie.
We could also see some unstable weather sweep in from the west toward the end of the heat wave that may cause rain and even violent storms.
The government agency issues heat warnings when very high temperature or humidity conditions are likely to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
To avoid heat-related illnesses, experts suggest people who fall into those categories drink lots of water before they feel thirsty to decrease risk of dehydration, avoid the sun or stay in shaded areas or air-conditioned rooms. And, of course, if you have to be outside, remember to wear sunscreen.
Certain parks in Montreal with pools, wading pools and water sprinklers will extend opening hours in the coming days. Summer hours continue until Aug. 23. For a list of parks with extended hours, check here.
Pools and wading pools in Laval and Longueuil will remain open to accommodate those needing a place to cool off. Many were scheduled to be closed starting Monday.
