Members of Montreal's black communities are worried not enough is being done to ensure they are properly represented in the city's 375th anniversary celebrations.
Michael Farkas, director of Youth in Motion, says the city rejected his group's proposal without explanation.
Youth in Motion wanted to hold a parade which would represent hundreds of years of black history in Montreal and Quebec, going back to Mathieu Da Costa, the interpreter on Samuel De Champlain's exploratory missions to Quebec.
Marjorie Villefranche of Maison D'Haiti said her group's application for a multi-media presentation was accepted.
She is concerned that city officials are not doing enough to represent the diversity of black communities within the city.
"If the city realized that there are not enough projects coming from those communities, you have to reach them to ask how come?" said Villefranche.
Another black group in Montreal, One Full Circle, said the call for proposals from Montreal was not well-publicized, and said there was a lack of outreach by city officials.
The city of Montreal, and the group responsible for Montreal 375, has yet to release a full list of activities and exhibits that will be taking place next year.
Organizers have yet to say how many projects were submitted, and how many were approved or rejected, and why.
