Let nobody say that Montreal's public works department fails to give advance warning of major construction work.
The city of Montreal advised the public on Friday that as of Monday June 20, sections of Sherbrooke St., Doctor Penfield Ave., and McTavish St. will be closed to traffic.
This work will last at least 11 months as crews replace infrastructure underneath the street, and take steps to beautify the area for Montreal's mountain-to-river corridor.
What's closed
- Sherbrooke St. from Peel Ave. to Robert Bourassa Blvd. (one lane to remain open)
- Doctor Penfield from Peel to McTavish
- McTavish from Sherbrooke to Doctor Penfield.
Drivers and buses will have to detour, with the city recommending drivers take René Levesque Blvd.
Work will take place between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., with very rare periods of late night and overnight work.
Montreal's 375th
Mayor Denis Coderre first proposed the walking path from Mount Royal to the waterfront in February 2015.
The cost of the beautification alone was pegged at $42 million.
The section being closed now is just the first phase of the projected walkway, which will run along McGill College, Beaver Hall Hill, and McGill St. south of Victoria Square.
Montreal city planners say construction on Beaver Hall Hill, Victoria Square, and McGill will begin at the end of the summer, as will work on de la Commune and Place D'Youville.
Work on the the third portion linking the two pathways will take place in 2017.
