The AMT train lines are back to normal for Friday afternoon’s rush hour after a pair of water main breaks in NDG dumped slush and ice over the tracks in the early morning.

Close to 20,000 train passengers had to endure delays of up to an hour on three commuter lines.

The water main breaks at the intersection of de Maisonneuve Blvd. West and Belgrave St. flooded the tracks between the Montreal West and Vendome train stations.

Residents called 9-1-1 at 4 a.m. to report their basements were being inundated. Firefighters and city workers shut off the broken pipe by 6 a.m.

But Luc Robillard, the Operations Chief for the fire department, said firefighters had to return half an hour later for a second break in the same area.

Police were on site to direct traffic.

Commuters using the St. Jerome train line had to get off at the Parc metro station. Those travelling on the Candiac line had to get off at the Montreal West train station and use shuttle buses to get to the metro line.

However, the Vaudreuil-Dorion train line was operational, albeit moving at reduced speeds of 30 km/h, instead of their usual speed of up to 100 km/h.
