MONTREAL - Mordecai Richler left a lasting mark on Canada's literary landscape, but there are no physical tributes to the writer in the city he called home.

That's something city councillor Marvin Rotrand is hoping to change.

At Monday night's council meeting Rotrand filed a petition asking the city of Montreal to "make an appropriate gesture to commemorate the contribution of Mordecai Richler in naming a street, a public place or a building in his honour."

More than 2500 signed the petition, and Rotrand hopes something is done the tenth anniversary of Richler's death on July 3, 2011.

The city's commission has received a number of suggestions of what should be done to honour Richler, ranging from renaming the Mile End library to renaming St. Urbain street.
