MONTREAL—On Thursday evening, over 200 demonstrators returned to ground well-worn during Quebec’s student demonstrations in the spring, carrying pots and pans to protest a guilty verdict earlier in the day against a prominent student leader.

The demonstrators were out to support Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois, the former spokesman for the student group CLASSE, who was found guilty of contempt of court.

According to Justice Denis Jacques, Nadeau-Dubois had incited protesters to ignore court orders during the several months of what some have dubbed the Maple Spring when he encouraged students to picket classes ordered open by judges.

The largely calm crowd met near Berri-UQAM metro at Emilie-Gamelin Square and marched on the locked doors of the Montreal court house.

After an hour of marching, the protest was declared illegal when demonstrators faced off with ranks of riot police in front of the Montreal police headquarters on St-Urbaine St.

Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois will address reporters at 10 a.m. on Friday.
