MONTREAL - Police have conducted a series of drug raids against the mafia throughout eastern Montreal and other municipalities.

The pre-dawn raids targeted 12 homes and one business, mostly located in Riviere des Prairies, that are all suspected of being used by a drug ring.

By midday officers had arrested 11 men and three women, eight of whom already have criminal records.

Police also seized 16 vehicles.

The RCMP, the Surete du Quebec, and the Montreal Police force were all taking part in the operation.

The investigation began in May 2011 when police learned of a group selling illicit drugs.

Officers say the ring sold at least 50 kg of cocaine since October, and was also selling marijuana.

The suspects will be arraigned Wednesday at the Montreal courthouse on charges of drug possession, trafficking, and conspiracy to traffic.
