A man in his forties has died in a massive industrial fire which burned for seven hours late Tuesday afternoon in Piedmont about 75 kilometres north of Montreal.

Two men were transferring oil or gas products when a giant explosion was set off at about 4:40 p.m.

Firefighters from St. Sauveur, Piedmont, Morin Heights, St. Adele and Prevost rushed to the scene to battle the ensuing blaze, which was only fully brought under control at about 11:30 p.m.

Another man suffered minor burns in the incident.

The provincial SQ police has opened an investigation and the CSST workers health safety and safety board was also on the site in an attempt to determine what caused the explosion and fire.
