Authorities are investigating an early morning incident which has left a 22-year-old woman in critical condition with her legs amputated after being hit by a freight train on Bridge St. south of Wellington.

The Canadian National Railway train was passing the exit near the Victoria Bridge when it ran into the young woman at about 2:45 a.m.

She was discovered lying near the tracks by a conductor aboard a train that passed at around 6 a.m.

The woman suffered serious injuries to her legs and lower body. Both of her legs have been amputated below the knees, according to an Urgences Sante ambulance official.

The woman was not an employee of the railway. She also suffered frostbite to her hands.

The circumstances around the accident remain unclear but the location where the accident occurred, near 322 Bridge, is known as a spot where pedestrians occasionally cross.
