Skating on Beaver Lake is a favourite Montreal past time and the weather lately has been perfect for it, but a problem with the ice means the lake remains off-limits to skaters.

Cold temperatures and sunny skies can create the perfect conditions for outdoor skating, but only the smaller artificial rink at Beaver Lake is open. Some of the toboggan runs are also closed, because they are located too close to the ice.

When city workers tested the edge of the man-made lake, they found the ice wasn't thick enough, and there was also a gap between the ice and the water below it.

The Ville-Marie borough paid $8.3 million to renovate Beaver Lake from 2012 to 2015. The cause of the ice issue is so far unknown and no one can say for sure when the rest of the rink will reopen.

A spokesperson from the borough told CTV Montreal the problem might have to do with the warm weather at the start of the season.

The borough has requested an expert report and is waiting to find out how to fix the problem.
