MONTREAL - About 40 homes and businesses were without water Monday after a snow removal vehicle knocked over a fire hydrant at around 1:30 a.m. near Papineau and de Maisonneuve, leaving an entire area flooded.

City crews were forced to undertake extensive efforts to repair the damage, which included digging up concrete to repair pipes at an area near the Papineau metro station. 

"A small district is being inconvenienced by all of this," said City of Montreal spokesperson Jacques-Alain Lavallee told CTV Montreal. "However our teams are on location and making sure that the main entrance to the Jacques Cartier Bridge is being taken care of and will be opened for tonight's rush hour."

The crews worked throughout the day and traffic snarls were kept to a minimum in spite of the repair work.

However the homes remained without water Monday evening.
