MONTREAL -- Police have released a man from custody following a deadly shooting at a bar in LaSalle.
Early Monday evening several men were sitting inside the Nite Lite bar on Newman Blvd. near Lapierre St. when one man pulled out a firearm. The gunman opened fire at point blank range, killing two men. A third man suffered minor injuries.
The victims were Jamie Laramee, 37, and his 25-year-old brother Cody. The man who was injured is in his twenties. Both of the deceased had prior run-ins with the law.
As police rushed to the scene they spotted a car leaving and they promptly stopped the vehicle and arrested the 20-year-old driver.
After several hours of questioning he was released, with officers calling him an important witness they will likely question again.
Police say they are looking for the assailant or assailants.
“Was it only one person that shot gunshots or were there other people that were armed with a handgun?” said Const. Anie Lemieux, adding that investigators will will likely be meeting with others in the days to come.
"We have people that have come forward and met with investigators that were on site. Investigators met with other people,” said Lemieux.
The bar where the shooting happened is in a residential neighbourhood.
The company that owns the plaza says there is no problem with crime or gangs.
“This is a very quiet area,” said Margarette Pereira of Enterprises Gino Melatti. “I've been working with the company for 24 years; there have never been any incidents around here.”
Many people who live nearby came to the scene of the crime, some saying the bar is often the scene of violence.
"I'm not surprised that there's been an altercation here because this area, there's a lot of bars and there's always cops staged here like midnight to four in the morning and there's always fights," said one resident.
Police confirmed they have called to the Nite Lite bar many times, but say this is the first death at that location.
