Police shot and killed a man in St. Jean sur Richelieu Wednesday morning after he allegedly robbed the Langevin jewelry store at a strip mall at 290 St. Luc.

Staff called police at 10:48 a.m. to report that a man had entered the store after it opened, pointed a weapon at employees and ordered everyone to lie on the ground. The man then escaped the store through a back entrance, taking some jewelry with him as he fled.

Police located the suspect soon after at the corner of Papineau and Montmartre Sts., about half a kilometre away.

Police say they drew their weapons and shot him because he had a weapon in his hand.

The individual, who was known to police, was brought to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Surete du Quebec is investigating the incident.
