Police have arrested a man in his fifties following the shooting death of a man in Mascouche.

42-year-old Patrick Perrault died after being shot overnight in a corn field.

Police say the victim and another man were walking through the field when one man was shot around 3 a.m.

The second man phoned police 90 minutes later, but municipal police and the Surete du Quebec only arrived on the scene at dawn.

They found the body of the victim fairly quickly, but even with sniffer dogs and an SQ helicopter it took another hour or so to find the second man.

Benoit Richard of the SQ says at this point, police do not know why the man was killed.

"We have a lot of hypotheses we're working on. Is it a meeting that went bad, is it people that shouldn't have been there, we have a lot of things to be looking at," said Richard.

Officers will search the field on Thursday on the chance that it was being used to farm marijuana.

"There could be pot, there could be anything over there," said Richard.
