Police forces across Quebec are stepping up their patrols for drunk and impaired drivers as the holiday party season begins.

They're calling it Operation Vaccin, and it will be in place until Jan. 3 as people go to many holiday parties.

In addition to drunk driving checkpoints, police officers will be handing out coasters as a reminder to find some other way home after a night of indulgence -- be it a taxi, a designated driver, a bus, or simply spending the night.

Starting Friday evening Operation Red Nose/Nez Rouge begins, so drivers can also call the volunteer organization to get a ride home, and to have someone else drive their car.

50,000 volunteers are giving their time to operate in 63 communities in Quebec, and another 40 across Canada.

Crashes involving alcohol are one of the most common causes of deadly collisions in Quebec.

Last year, during the six-week operation, police arrested 37 drivers per day for driving under the influence.

Vaccin is organized by the Surete du Quebec, Montreal Poilce, the SAAQ and the Association of police chiefs of Quebec.
