Montreal police have launched a pedestrian safety campaign aimed at seniors.

According to police statistics, nearly 50 per cent of people struck by cars in Montreal are over 55 years of age.

Some of the tips in the safety campaign may seem like common sense, but police say many pedestrians can be careless when crossing the street, and that seniors are especially at risk.

Police are asking pedestrians to:

  • establish visual contact with drivers before walking through an intersection; especially crucial when near a heavy vehicle.
  • cross the street at a crosswalk; never jaywalk
  • be aware of surroundings at all times
  • seniors should consider their physical abilities before committing to crossing the street
