The Mercier Bridge will completely reopen to traffic Sunday morning, two weeks earlier than planned.

One side of the bridge has been closed since June 20 in order to carry out work on the expansion joints, paving and painting. Since then, there has been one lane of traffic in both directions, creating traffic headaches for commuters.

The majority of the work has been completed so the federal bridge authority is reopening the bridge ahead of schedule, at 8 a.m. Sunday. There is, however, still finalization work to do that will requires two more closings.

On the weekends of Aug. 8-9 and Aug. 15-16, there will be one lane available in either direction and the Montreal-bound access ramp of Highway 132 will be closed. There will also be another two months of work on the bridger next summer, which will complete all construction on the federal portion of the bridge.

Work will still need to be done on the Quebec portion of the bridge that extends from the seaway to Lasalle.
