MONTREAL - Yvan Grandmaison, 41, has been found guilty on two counts related to impaired driving causing the death of a 73-year-old woman and severely injuring her husband on Ceres Ave. in Dollard-des-Ormeaux on February 21, 2012.

Grandmaison confessed to having consumed three beers and taken cocaine prior to the accident which killed Ngan Wong Yee and badly injured her husband Poom Huy Shuy, 72.

Grandmaison testified that he was driving to the depanneur when distracted. As a result, he was unable to see the couple walking on the quiet residential street.

An alcohol test indicated that Grandmaison was driving within the legal limit at the time of the crash but a urine sample also detected the presence of cocaine, methamphetamine and the antidepressant Seroquel.

His lawyer argued that the urine sample might have been detecting substances consumed a day prior and he noted that the couple was walking in the street rather than the ice-covered sidewalk when they were hit by Grandmaison's Pontiac Sunfire.Poom, has not been able to leave the hospital since the collision.

Sentencing arguments are scheduled for May 29, at which point his family will describe how drastically their lives have changed since the deadly crash caused by a repeat offender.
