An apartment building fire caused heavy damage but no injuries Wednesday evening in NDG.

The fire broke out at 9 p.m. on the top floor of a four-storey building at 4516 Decarie Blvd. near Cote St. Luc Rd.

The 17 apartments were evacuated without incident, as were the adjacent buildings.

Robert Williams was one tenant who got out safely.

"There was a kitchen fire, that's all I know. Across the hall I saw orange outside my window. Windows exploding I heard them so I went out the hallway filled with smoke. Just went down the stairs and got out," Williams said.

Up to 100 firefighters were eventually able to put the fire out, but the damage is extensive.

Those who live in the building where the fire took place will not be able to return.

The fourth floor is gutted and the floor caved in, with some appliances on the top storey crashed through to the floor below. Emergency repair crews were on site Thursday morning to board up the building and make sure nobody could enter dangerous areas.

Damage is estimated at $1,000,000.
