A 51-year-old man has been arrested following a possible attempted kidnapping of a toddler in Outremont -- and a subsequent scuffle with the boy's father.

Simon Delorme of the Montreal police force said they began receiving many calls to 9-1-1 at 4 p.m. Wednesday after a fight broke out between two men at F.X. Garneau Park at Cote-Ste-Catherine Rd. and Outremont Ave.

It seems the 51-year-old man may have tried to kidnap the other man’s three-year-old son. Police say they are investigating that possibility.

When police arrived at the scene, they arrested the 51-year-old man. The child’s father was taken to hospital for very minor injuries, and the child is safe and sound.

A crime scene was established at the Outremont-area park as investigators try to piece together exactly what occurred.

Police have been questioning the suspect, and as of Thursday morning are recommending charges of kidnapping, forcible confinement, armed assault and possession of a weapon. He is scheduled to appear in court Thursday afternoon.

They say the two men did not know each other.
