Numerous coyote sightings in the Montreal area have been reported recently on social media, including several claims of a coyote wandering in Kirkland.

The city of Kirkland recently sent out a notice urging its residents to be vigilant. The notice asks residents who see the coyote to immediately call Kirkland’s municipal patrol to arrange for the safe capture of the animal.

Coyotes are smaller than a wolf, with pointier ears. They have been on the Island of Montreal for the past ten years or more, according to David Rodrigue, director of the Ecomuseum in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue.

“They'll eat berries, fruits, flowers, but they'll take most of the micromammals like rabbits, small deer mice, ground birds, as well as some larger prey such as porcupines and raccoons,” said Rodrigue.

He also said that residents who are worried about their pets should keep them on a leash.

“There's no real reason to be scared, I think they're fascinating animals, you should cherish the moment, observe it,” he said.

Anyone who sees a coyote in the Kirkland area should call 514-630-1234.
