Police in Blainville have shot an armed man.

Quebec's Bureau of Independent Investigation issued a statement Monday evening saying it was investigating the shooting.

The BEI said the man was still hospitalized but is expected to survive.

According to the agency, a 45-year-old man entered a pharmacy with an X-Acto knife and a replica firearm.

The man is accused of pointing the knife at a customer and ordering him to leave, then causing minor injury to an employee he took hostage.

Police arriving at the scene shot the man.

Eight BEI investigators began work at 8:30 p.m. Monday, accompanied by a pair of Sureté du Quebec forensic examiners.

All witnesses are asked to contact the investigative bureau at http://www.bei.gouv.qc.ca
