WINDSOR, Ont. - Bell Canada is facing a class action suit from customers who allege breaches of privacy arising from its recently discontinued target ads program.

The suit against Bell subsidiaries alleges they used the program to track, collect and sell the sensitive account and browsing information of their customers to advertisers.

The lawsuit seeks 750-million dollars in damages.

Bell has not commented on the allegations, which have not been proven in court.

Bell has cancelled the program, but has indicated it planned to reintroduce it at some future date and seek explicit customer consent through an opt-in approach.

A statement from lawyers who filed the suit says the federal privacy commissioner started investigating the program because of an unprecedented volume of complaints.

The commissioner found Bell violated the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act.

Bell is the parent company of BellMedia and CTV.
