Police in Gatineau are investigating what they call the suspicious death of a woman in her forties.

Overnight, officers rushed to a home in the Aylmer neighbourhood after getting a 9-1-1 call.

They arrived to find a woman suffering from multiple injuries.

Though she was rushed to hospital, doctors were unable to save her life.

They arrested a 49-year-old man who is considered an important witness to the events leading to the death.

Police held a conference call with the man Monday evening, and he will be kept in custody overnight until a scheduled court appearance Tuesday.

Police will meet Tuesday with the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions in order to present the evidence they have and determine what charges can be laid against the man, if applicable.

Gatineau police could not say Thursday if the man and woman knew each other.
