MONTREAL - Montreal's latest cold snap was too much for some pipes in the city.

Two water mains broke overnight as temperatures dipped to 17 below zero, flooding several streets and at least one home.

A 15-centimetre pipe broke on Jean Talon near 9th Ave. around 3 o'clock, flooding streets, but causing no other damage.

However it took hours for crews to shut off the water, only succeeding in turning off the taps at 6 a.m.

The second break happened about the same time, but in the residential/commercial neighbourhood south of LaFontaine Park.

An entire block of St. Christophe was flooded between Ontario and Sherbrooke streets by the split in the six-centimetre water main. Several parked cars were stuck in the quickly forming ice, and at least one basement was flooded.
