The 22-year-old victim of a tragic train accident in Montreal is thanking those who have helped her.
Sarah Jo Stott lost both of her legs after being struck by a train at about 3 a.m. on the bitterly cold night of December 8. Stott lay in the intense cold for several hours before being spotted and saved..
But now she's thanking those who have expressed support and those who have donated to a fundraising campaign that has raised over $62,000.
“Words can't describe how grateful I am. There are no words that I can think of right now,” she told CTV Montreal Monday.
Stott, who worked at the Irish Embassy bar downtown, has undergone a dozen surgeries. One leg was amputated above the hip and the other below the knee. She also lost several fingers due to frostbite as she lay in the cold for hours near Bridge and Wellington.
She remains on strong medication and has a memory loss issue but Stott vows to fight on and pursue her dreams.
“I want to have to have a good future. I want to go back to school. I want to have a house. I want to have kids. I have this whole future in my head planned out,” she said. “I can be a better person coming out of this than I was going into it.”
She expressed profound appreciation for those who have helped her through the difficult times.
“It's just overwhelming and when this is all over, it's obvious that I have some reason to be here. There's some reason I'm alive. I would have died if I was supposed to.”
