Eight years after it began, the major work on the federal section of the Mercier Bridge will end this summer.

But that means one more summer of closures as crews replace the bridge deck, with only one lane open in each direction from June unil August.

Construction crews are going to spend eight weeks removing and replacing 78 concrete panels.

Prep work began this past weekend and will continue for the next two weekends, limiting traffic to one lane in each direction from Friday nights until Monday mornings.

The major construction work begins on June 24, St. Jean Baptiste, and will last the rest of the summer.

During this time only one lane will be open in each direction, and the lanes will only be 3 m wide.

During the first phase of work, when crews have closed the access ramp from Chateauguay, trucks will be prohibited from coming into town via the Mercier during the morning rush hour and from heading to the South Shore from 3 until 7 p.m.

During the second phase of work the access ramp from Montreal and La Prairie will be closed, and all truck traffic towards Montreal will be prohibited.

The Bridge Corporation does not yet know when the second phase of construction will begin.
