An emergency room doctor from Ottawa who wrote an open letter to P.K. Subban in The Gazette last week was in Montreal Wednesday to offer a $250,000 donation to the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation.
In his letter, Dr. Charles Kowalski's letter thanked Subban and slammed the Montreal Canadiens for trading him.
Kowalski said he had an important reason for donating the money that goes beyond being a Subban fan.
“Neo-natal medicine saved my son's life and it's the least I can do,” said Kowalski, who took out this full page letter in the newspaper to thank P.K. for his $10 million commitment to the hospital.
“PK's the real deal. He was what I expected. Fine young man and role model,” said Kowalski, who spoke to the hockey player Monday night.
“He invited me and my family to be guests of him (in Nashville) for the Montreal-Nashville game in January,” said Kowalski, who said he and his wife decided to increase a planned $50,000 donation to the Children's Hospital Foundation.
The $250,000 will be donated over a period of five years.
The doctor is also donating his tickets to kids with illnesses and is asking fans to donate $15 each to help Subban reach his goal.
“All I'm asking for is $15. Habs fans around the world, $15 each,” he said. “We've lost PK the hockey player but still have PK the person and he is doing wonderful things for this city. Let's help him out,” he said.
The foundation said Subban is thrilled.
“He’s very, very happy and very appreciative,” said Kim Fraser of the Montreal Children's Hospital Foundation.
