The provincial government has reaffirmed that it will eventually increase sales tax by 1%, but at this point it's not certain when Quebecers will have to spend more.

In her last budget Monique Jerome-Forget said the provincial sales tax will increase by 1% in 2011, and this week current finance minister Raymond Bachand was squelching rumours the tax increase would happen now.

Bachand says the increase will only happen when the economy is once again on a solid footing, "which is not the case today."

Before the last election the Liberals ridiculed the PQ for recommending the same sales tax increase.

Now opposition leader Pauline Marois is dismissing the government's efforts.

"I want to know where he is going. He wanted to drive the bus, ok, he's at the head of the bus," said Marois.

The Charest government has promised it will balance the budget by 2013-14, but a one percent increase in sales tax only makes up 40% of the gap between spending and revenue.
