Be careful what you wish for, goes the old saying.
The PQ had demanded an inquiry into the construction industry in Quebec.
Now that party planner extraordinaire Gilles Cloutier has blown the lid off the Charbonneau Commission, the PQ is saying: “Hold on, not so fast.”
Former and present Parti Quebecois ministers have been named and the PQ is running for cover
The premier is appealing to Charbonneau for prudence, which some might see as political interference.
Cloutier testified about his ability to get politicians and engineers and contractors together for drinks, sporting events and dinners.
Payoffs, money laundering and illegal fundraising: all part and parcel of Quebec politics.
We must remember that his allegations have not been proven as fact and sometimes the Charbonneau Commission feels like the Salem witch trials.
But Cloutier has admitted that he has been fixing elections for almost half a century.
Back in the day, he would give farmers a couple of cows if they were able to deliver votes.
Today, it’s pretty much the same. Cows may be no longer be the currency of corruption, now it’s pretty much all pork
Tremblay's sleepy legacy
If former Mayor Tremblay’s appearance at the Charbonneau commission was a movie, it might be called While You Were Sleeping.
Tremblay had promised us that one day the truth would come out.
The truth, we found out at the Charbonneau Commission, was that the mayor was indeed asleep at the switch or just ignoring reality while a culture of collusion and corruption reigned over city hall.
Blissful ignorance or willful negligence. ?
I’m not sure which one is worse
Bill 14 aims to keep bilingualism to the elites
I sometimes wonder if the PQ wants to see Bill 14 defeated.
Let’s face it; in their way of thinking, it would give them a great election issue.
They would paint themselves as the only true defenders of the faith.
Here’s the latest offering from someone who is supposed to be the premier of all Quebecers. Her message to immigrants:
En ce moment, les gens qu'on accueille au Québec deviennent canadiens. Avec cette citoyenneté, viennent le bilinguisme, le passeport canadien...
The people we welcome to Quebec, she says, become Canadians and with that citizenship comes bilingualism, a Canadian passport and so on.
We want them to become Quebecers, living in French.
For the PQ, speaking English is such a bad thing. Bilingualism is just for the elites, not needed for the les gens du pays to parler anglais and the immigrants, who arrive on our shores, are coming to Canada.
So the PQ is indeed positioning itself for the next election.
The identity issue will be front and centre for the PQ, us and them, nous autres, les autres.
A scary thought indeed, a PQ majority. It would be devastating.
We’ve had an avant-gout of what is arguably the worst Quebec government in memory and frankly, it tastes awful.
