Montreal police are investigating after a 49-year-old man died of his injuries following an attack Friday night in Lachine.

The man was likely attacked with a sharp weapon, said police, though the nature of the injuries is so far unknown.

He was found bleeding on the steps outside a duplex at 2757 Thessereault St. near 26th Ave. at 9:20 p.m. Bypassers called police to alert them to the crime.

“There was a shirt over there full of blood. The stairs were all full of blood and that grey car, the window was broken,” said local resident Danny Walker.

The victim had major injuries all over his body and was in critical condition. He died soon after in hospital.

Police seized evidence outside of the apartment and more inside.

An autopsy will be performed on the body next week, said Montreal police spokesperson Danny Richer.

The victim was known to police, but had no active files, Richer said. A marijuana grow op was found inside the apartment.

“They discovered a grow-op, about 100 plants of marijuana so other investigators were there for that specific kind of information. Some witnesses were met also,” explained Richer, who said investigators spoke with friends of the victim who did not want to be interviewed.

Police said it was unclear if the victim lived inside the apartment.

Neighbour Bob Nolan, however, has lived in the unit below where the crime took place for a year and a half. He said he saw his upstairs neighbour in passing.

“He was always very good to me and very good to my family,” said Nolan.

Barricades were already up when Nolan got home Friday night. Police searched his home.

“They searched all the rooms in my house and in my basement. I don't know if they were looking for someone or something,” he said.

No suspects have been arrested so far.

Police are seeking the public’s help in tracking down a possible suspect, and ask anyone with information to come forward. They can call Info-Crime at 514-393-1133.

“It happened at 9 p.m. around big streets -- 32nd Avenue, Provost, Sherbrooke – so maybe somebody may have seen a suspect one or at least many running by feet, or taking a car and going away rapidly,” said Richer.
