MONTREAL - A fire in an Ahuntsic-Cartierville duplex claimed the life of a 77-year-old man Sunday morning.
The man was found unconscious in his bathroom after the fire raged on the first floor of a three-storey building on Miller St. at 5 a.m.
"They brought him outside and started the resuscitating manoeuvres, and as Urgences Santes arrived, so they took over the situation. They brought the man to the hospital, and this is where the death was confirmed," said Andre Paquette of the Montreal fire department.
The man's son was treated for smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire is undetermined.
Due to the man's death, the case has been turned over to the Montreal police arson squad.
There was one smoke detector in the basement of the building, and it had no battery inside it, said the fire department.
The fire department is reminded people to change the batteries in the smoke detectors when they move their clocks forward for the end of Daylight Savings Time, which is on Nov. 7 this year.
