The city of Montreal has launched an online "open portal" to make it easier for citizens to enjoy and understand the city.

It includes access to all kind of documents and historical archives, including photos taken from the 1920s to the 1950s.

Programmer Patrice Fiset used some of these photos to build his own web site.

"I got really excited with the archive pictures because I'm a big fan of going to archives web site and looking at the pictures and i always find it tedious to

Go through all of the pictures, especially that some archive web sites can have," said Fiset.

So, he decided to take the photos and make them easier to access.

"Sometimes they're small and I saw these pictures and I thought, I want to be able to see them with all my screen."

"It's very interesting as well to recognize places you've been and try to compare what was there before and what changed," said Fiset.
