A mother-and-daughter team will be lacing up their sneakers for a very special walk next weekend and it's taken a lot of healing - both physical and emotional - to get to the starting line.

Some 22 years ago, Esti Walsh was diagnosed with breast cancer. Hiding under a wig and behind closed doors, she attempted to keep the disease from her daughter, Lauren.

Walsh was determined not to let her children find out.

"It all made sense. She had this wig, but she was secretive about it at first. I wasn't aware that she had one. She did all this in bathroom, she made sure to lock the door. This was all private," said Lauren.

Esti said her reason to keep quiet was simple.

"Why did I keep it a secret? Because there weren't the groups to talk to," said Esti.

Further, there wasn't the Weekend to End Breast Cancer. That's why 67-year-old Esti, now strong and healthy, will walk the 60-kilometre two-day walk for the second consecutive year, with her daughter by her side.

"Doing this breast cancer walk, today, has brought out so much in me. I'm able to talk about things so much more freely than I did before," said Esti.
