Work on the sewage collector near the Bonaventure Expressway is going according to schedule.

As of noon on Friday 34 of the 56 support beams in the interceptor have been removed.

Those support beams have been rotting, and pieces have been falling into the sewage flow leading to the city's main wastewater treatment plant.

The city of Montreal has justified its week-long dump of untreated sewage by saying those pieces could disable the existing treatment plant, which would lead to a much longer dump.

Richard Fontaine, head of Montreal's wastewater treatment centre, said the city is testing water constantly as work continues.

"On the water we have people taking samples at Sorel, to make sure that we're in proper conditions at that area. Everything is rolling according to schedule," said Fontaine.

The city has yet to release the results of any of its tests of water samples. It's takes 24 hours to test water for fecal coliform counts.
