Montreal police have arrested a man who was wanted by Toronto police for murder.

Max Edwin Tutiven is a suspect in the September 2012 murder of a gas station attendant in Toronto.

He is accused of running over and killing Jayesh Parajapati after filling up his SUV with gas and driving off without paying.

The RCMP said he was suspected of stealing from gas stations in Toronto and Montreal on at least three other occasions, and in January 2015 alerted the public that Tutiven was believed to be in Montreal.

Two days ago Toronto police offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to Tutiven's arrest.

Thursday morning Montreal police surrounded a home on Chambly St. near Rouen in the Mercier-Hochelaga Maisonneuve borough. When police arrived, they knocked on the door and a man opened it and immediately shut the door.

Police called for the SWAT team and waited for a judge to approve an entry warrant in order to go inside, but the suspect surrendered peacefully around 9:30 a.m.

Montreal police would not confirm the man's identity, but Toronto police say the man arrested is Tutiven.

After Tutiven is transferred to Toronto, he will be arraigned in court on charges of second-degree murder.

Inside the apartment building, people were not familiar with the alleged crime. They did say however that the suspect was going by the name of ‘Eddy’ and that he didn't seem to have a job. He lived alone with his dog, and rarely left his tiny apartment.

Another neighbour who didn't want to be identified said Tutiven was a helpful man who helped her carrying her grocery bags.

Prajapati is survived by his wife and son, who live in Toronto. His death inspired Bill 12 in Ontario, also known as "Jayesh's Law," which requires customers to pre-pay at the pumps, and toughens rules against employers who expect employees to pay for stolen gas.

This is the second time this year that a person wanted for committing murder in Toronto has been found in Montreal.

On June 4 Montreal police tracked down Justin Scott, who is charged with killing his mother.
