Montreal man dead after boat explodes in Fort Lauderdale

A Montreal man is dead and several others are injured after a boat exploded in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The blast was caught on a surveillance video of a boat exploding around 6 p.m. on Monday evening.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservasion Commission spokesperson Arielle Callender said that the boat exploded after the engines were started and there were seven passengers on board.

Sebastien Gauthier, 41, died of his injuries.

"The other six occupants were transferred to a local hospital for treatment," said Callender

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue (FLFR) said on X that three of those had traumatic injuries.

Fire and rescue added that the cause of the fire is under investigation and teams from the U.S. Coast Guard, police department and other agencies are assisting.

Global Affairs Canada said its consular officials in Miami are in contact with Gauthier's family and providing consular assistance.
