MONTREAL -- The Montreal Impact traded Andrew Wenger to the Philadelphia Union for Jack McInerney in an exchange of forwards Friday.
The Impact made Wenger the first overall pick of the SuperDraft when they entered Major League Soccer in 2012.
The 23-year-old had one goal in four games this season and has six goals and three assists in 51 career matches. He was Montreal's starting striker the first three games of the season while star forward Marco Di Vaio served a suspension.
The 21-year-old McInerney, drafted seventh overall by the Union in 2010, is in his fifth MLS campaign. The American has a goal and an assist in four games this season and 25 goals and four assists in 95 career MLS games.
"We'd like to thank Andrew for everything he did both on and off the field for this club," Impact sporting director Nick De Santis said in a statement. "He is a very talented player who played an important role in the history of this club as we transitioned into MLS.
"We are extremely pleased to be able to bring in a player of Jack McInerney's quality. At a young age, he's already showed the ability to score goals in this league and we feel his qualities and soccer sense fit well within our style of play."
McInerney led the Union in goals with 12 in 25 games last season and was named to the MLS all-star team. He led the club with eight goals in 25 games in 2012.
He was a member of the U.S. CONCACAF Gold Cup-winning team in 2013 and previously played on the American under-23, under-20 and under-17 squads.
