Melanie Joly wasted no time hitting the campaign trail in the Montreal riding of Ahuntsic-Cartierville.

The day after she was chosed as the Liberal candidate for the riding, Joly was on the street introducing herself to potential voters and explaining what she would do for the riding.

Joly, who became the Liberal candidate after the third ballot, said she grew up in the area, and so has ideas about how to improve its long-term economic prospects.

"I'm convinced that we were able to get the support because I was able to bring new ideas, especially the Chabanel platform, and I was able to build good ties and get the support from different communities within the riding," said Joly.

Joly also said she would move back to the riding if elected MP.

The riding is currently represented by Maria Mourani, who was elected under the Bloc Quebecois banner in 2011 and now represents the NDP.

However like several other ridings in the Montreal area the map has been redrawn, giving Joly the hope she will be elected.

The fight to win the Liberal nomination was bitter, with several candidates spending months, if not years, gathering support.

Joly won the nomination Sunday night on the third ballot, leading one candidate to storm out of the room.

Some candidates said the Liberal party had rigged the event in Joly's favour by delaying the nomination meeting until Aug. 23.

Joly countered that argument by saying the later date gave all candidates more time to gather support

"There were people becoming members until the very end, so every candidate had the chance to have more member until the very end," said Joly.

Joly, who placed second in her bid to become mayor of Montreal in 2013, ran against Grace Batchoun, a project manager, engineer Viken Attarian and Elie Kassissia, who works in business.

Attarian and Batchoun rallied behind Joly after her win, saying they had to agree with the votes cast.

"I think she's a very capable woman, so I think people will rally when they see a sincere effort to be able to win," said Attarian.
