Medical students at McGill University will be holding a one-day protest later this month to protest legislation which would affect their future careers in Quebec.
At a meeting on Tuesday evening 77 percent of the department voted in favour of taking strike action on March 30, meaning students will not attend lectures, nor shadow doctors and meet patients in hospitals and clinics.
During the debate several students said they wanted to make it clear they were protesting Bill 20 and its effect on patient care and teaching.
Medical students at the University of Sherbrooke have also voted for a one-day walkout to protest Bill 20, as have medical and nursing students at l'Université de Montreal.
Students said they were not walking out to support the so-called austerity protests being held by students at other universities and CEGEPS.
Speaking in Quebec City, Health Minister Gaetan Barrette said that McGill students had misunderstood the bill.
Bill 20 has been widely criticized because it would impose quotas on doctors and dock their pay if they do not see enough patients.
Public hearings on Bill 20 continue this week at the National Assembly, with general practitioners scheduled to testify on Thursday.
