A 47-year-old man is in custody after allegedly stabbing another man who was walking on Mount Royal with his son.

The 56-year-old victim was initially in critical condition with injuries to his upper body but has since been upgraded to stable.

The 31-year-old son told police they were walking near the chalet when the assailant blinded them with a flashlight and then assaulted the victim.

Police spent the night searching the mountain for clues, and early Tuesday morning formed a human chain to begin another sweep of the area.

At 7:15 a.m. officers located the suspect, along with a weapon that may have been used in the attack.

"They found on him enough evidence to put the guy under arrest," said Benoit Boisselle of the Montreal police department.

Police said the man didn't resist arrest and is likely mentally ill.

The suspect is 47-year-old Jean Therrien, and a man with that name has used the services at the Old Brewery Mission several times in the past nine months.

"For the time he was here he was peaceful," said Matthew Pearce"[He] did not cause any incidents, was not expelled. There was no record that he caused any problems when he was here."

Therrien is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday to be charged with attempted murder and could be sent for a psychiatric evaluation.
