Quebec Solidaire and the Green Party have rebuffed the Parti Quebecois's proposal to run a single, anti-Liberal left-wing candidate in a Verdun by-election.

On Monday morning Quebec Solidaire reiterated that Veronique Martineau will run in the yet-to-be-called by-election in Verdun.

Last week the PQ floated the idea of the three parties uniting behind a single candidate, because an internal PQ poll showed that was the best way to defeat the Liberals.

MNA Manon Massé said Monday the idea was just the PQ's leader "engaging in media tactics instead of making realistic propositions."

She said that Martineau was a true left-wing candidate who used to work at the Verdun Women's Centre, and who was well aware of the needs of the low-income residents of the riding.

Meanwhile the Green Party said that it could get behind the idea of a single candidate, as long as that candidate was Green Party leader Alex Tyrrell.

"The announcement of a poll showing us at 10.9% in Verdun is inspiring news, especially since we were honoured with 2.1% of the votes in 2014," wrote the Green Party in a statement.

The PQ candidate for Verdun was originally Lorraine Pintal, but she dropped out and was replaced by Richard Langlais, who according to PQ leader Jean-Francois Lisée is ready to drop out in favour of an independent candidate.
