Jim Hughes has won the NDP nomination in the riding of NDG-Westmount.
Former head of the Old Brewery Mission will take on Liberal incumbent Marc Garneau in the newly drawn riding on Oct. 19.
It was a hard-fought battle for Hughes, in a race against five other NDP hopefuls, including former The Gazette journalist Sue Montgomery and city councillor Peter McQueen.
Hughes came out the clear winner, however, with more than 50 per cent of the votes in the first round.
Over 800 NDP members participated in the vote.
The results of the vote were revealed Sunday at the riding office at the corner of Sherbrooke St. and Melrose Ave.
Hughes has cited $15-a-day daycare as an issue he’s excited about and said he would try “to open the doors of the economy to women, and single moms in particular, that they haven’t had before.”
