Former Quebec Premier Jacques Parizeau was honoured Sunday with an honorary doctorate from the Université de Montreal.

The university's rector says the honorary degree recognizes Parizeau's contribution to Quebec society.

Parizeau was elected Premier in 1994 and served for two years, resigning after Quebecers rejected sovereignty in the second referendum on the topic.

Parizeau also served as the province's finance minister under René Levesque when the PQ first came to power in 1976.

Before entering politics in the 1970s Parizeau earned a PhD from the London School of Economics.
