Former New Brunswick member of Parliament Elsie Wayne has died at the age of 84.
The death was confirmed Tuesday morning by the province's official Opposition.
Wayne was first elected to Saint John common council in 1977 and became the city's first female mayor in 1983.
In 1993, she and Jean Charest were the only Progressive Conservative MPs to win their seats in the House of Commons.
Wayne represented the riding of Saint John until 2004, and was a strong supporter of Canadian veterans.
She suffered a stroke in November 2009.
