Aleksandra Wozniak, 25, of Blainville has advanced to the second round of the U.S. Open with a straight-set victory over the 90th ranked Serbian Vezna Dolonc, 24.
Wozniak edged the Serbian 7-5, 7-6 (5) and will now likely face second-seed Victoria Azarenka who is expected to beat the German Dinah Pfizenmaier later Tuesday.
Wozniak, who has a career total of $1.6 million in prize earnings, had seen her ranking slip from career-best 21 in 2009 to her current 323.
She recently returned to competition following an injury to her right shoulder, which she suffered last September.
In other Canadian tennis news, 40th ranked Vasek Pospisil lost 4-6, 3-6, 7-6 (9), 6-2, 7-6 (10). to Brazillian qualifier Rogerio Dutra Silva and earlier in the day Milos Raonic advanced with a straight set 6-3, 7-6 (6), 6-3, win over Italian qualifier Thomas Fabbiano.
