The woman accused of abducting a day-old infant has been found fit to stand trial.

Valerie Poulin-Collins, 21, was arrested last week, hours after she allegedly took a newborn from a hospital.

She was hospitalized herself and put on a ventilator for roughly 48 hours before recovering enough to appear in court. However at her first court appearance Poulin-Collins appeared tired and pale, and was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation to determine if she could understand the charges against her: kidnapping a person under 14, and confining a person under 16.

Appearing in court a week later, a psychiatrist reported she was capable of understanding.

The judge ordered her to be transferred from a hospital to a jail cell, but said Poulin-Collins should also be visited by a psychiatrist who can focus on suicide-prevention.

Poulin-Collins is scheduled to appear in court on June 18 for a bail hearing.

Poulin Collins been arrested before and is due in court on June 30 and July 4 to face a string of minor charges including drug possession and theft.

Amber Alert

Poulin Collins is accused of walking into the Trois Rivieres hospital disguised as a nurse on Monday evening and taking Victoria Boisclair, born just hours earlier.

The Surete du Quebec issued an Amber Alert, and former neighbours recognized Poulin Collins in a security photo distributed by police.

A friend of Poulin Collins told La Presse that the woman came to her house with a baby on Monday, and that the three went shopping for diapers and other baby items.

According to La Presse, Poulin Collins said she had adopted the child from a teenaged couple, and had been trying to adopt for two years.

Poulin Collins was arrested three-and-a-half hours after the infant was abducted and was immediately taken to hospital.

The father of the child, Simon Boisclair, has attended every court hearing but has not spoken to reporters since his daughter was returned.
