The woman suspected of abducting a day-old infant from a hospital in Trois Rivieres will be detained in hospital as she undergoes a psychiatric evaluation.
Valerie Poulin Collins, 21, was initially arrested on Monday evening, about three hours after an infant was taken from a hospital, but she needed medical attention and was unconscious and on a ventilator until late Wednesday evening.
Police promptly took her into custody and began interrogating her before her court appearance on Thursday.
Appearing tired and pale, Poulin Collins was deemed unfit to formally be arraigned on one count of kidnapping a person under 14 and another count of kidnapping and confinement of a person under 16.
If convicted, she would face anywhere from five years to life in prison.
She will be detained in hospital until her next court hearing on June 5.
She has also been ordered to stay away from the child she is accused of taking, and refraining from contacting the girl's parents.
Poulin Collins been arrested before and is due in court on June 30 and July 4 to face a string of minor charges including drug possession and theft.
Amber Alert
Poulin Collins is accused of walking into the Trois Rivieres hospital disguised as a nurse on Monday evening and taking Victoria Boisclair, born just hours earlier.
The Surete du Quebec issued an Amber Alert, and former neighbours recognized Poulin Collins in a security photo distributed by police.
A friend of Poulin Collins told La Presse that the woman came to her house with a baby on Monday, and that the three went shopping for diapers and other baby items.
According to La Presse, Poulin Collins said she had adopted the child from a teenaged couple, and had been trying to adopt for two years.
Poulin Collins was arrested three-and-a-half hours after the infant was abducted and was immediately taken to hospital.
The Boisclair-McMahon family attended court on Thursday to watch the proceedings, but did not speak to any reporters.
